The African porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis), or the African Crested porcupine, or African White Crested Porcupine, is a species of porcupine found in various regions of Africa.
What do African Porcupines look like:
African porcupines are one of the largest rodents in Africa, with some reaching lengths of over two feet. One of the most distinctive features is their coat of sharp quills. These quills are modified hairs that cover the animal’s back and sides. When threatened, the porcupine raises its quills to make itself look more frightening.
Habitat:
African porcupines are found in a variety of habitats, including forests, grasslands, and rocky areas. These creatures are very adaptable to many environments. They are also known to inhabit regions near places populated by humans. When hunting African Porcupine, we often find them in agriculture fields.
Distribution:
African Porcupine’s range expands from North Africa down to Sub-Saharan Africa.
Behavior:
African Porcupines are nocturnal herbivores, feeding on a variety of plants, including bark, fruits, roots, and tubers.
Reproduction:
The mating season for African Porcupines really depends on the region. After a gestation period of around 112 days, a female will give birth to one or two offspring.
